Intercultural Leadership

Like a large stone in the middle of a river, cultural differences cause a lot of turbulence. The stone makes waves and causes chaos in the water. When it comes to cross-cultural communication or behaviour, we quickly reach our limits.

Leadership success depends on successfully mastering this turbulence in our networked world.

The people of the globalised world are not just out there; they are here and with us. We all work together to make our organisation a success. Innovative solutions emerge when we understand and use different cultural contexts.

Culture Matters is a methodology for testing people, teams and organisations for intercultural compatibility. If we know and understand the cultural makeup of the individual, disruptions are eliminated, motivation is strengthened, and creativity is promoted.

Culture Matters goes to the source of value systems. Origin, upbringing and faith describe the personality. In living together, we must know and use them with respect and humility for our joint work.

Like a Fish in the Water

Whenever we communicate, we lead.

Cross-cultural leadership processes are ongoing and dynamic. If we use our analogy, the big question is: what happens to a fish when the water is turbulent?

It is difficult to understand all the natural forces of cultural differences. In everyday life, they often lead to misunderstandings. Sensing cultural differences is one thing, but knowing how to deal with this realisation is the real challenge.

Culture Matters is unique in that it combines rigorous analytical cultural skills with practical international experience in human resources management.

Together with you, we develop an authentic understanding of cross-cultural leadership.

What can Culture Matters do? Every company, every organisation is special. With the help of the Culture Matters methodology,

  • we analyse the intercultural maturity of your company
  • we develop pragmatic solutions and recommendations for action
  • we resolve disruptions through workshops, training or coaching and optimise intercultural collaboration

References & Contact

An international program at Munich University of Applied Sciences is a great example of what we can do. We came to this project when a smoothly running industry outreach project failed. Were “cultural differences” the main cause of the unsatisfactory team dynamics?

The answer was relatively simple: the strong currents of culture were underestimated. Mistakes were made in terms of team composition and expectation management. Intercultural communication has suffered as a result.

It was time for bold action. Armed with careful cultural analyses, we were able to make concrete and actionable suggestions to drive the program towards success in teaching, learning and outreach. We recommended that program management prioritise interculturality at all contact points with students.
